Truck Leaking Acid Shuts Down 2 Blocks Near U.S. Cellular Field

HazMat response shut down the 3500 and 3600 blocks of South Wentworth

Emergency crews had almost completely cleared the scene Wednesday night after a truck leaking acid prompted a HazMat response and temporarily closed the Red Line platform near U.S. Cellular Field on the South Side.

As of 9 p.m., police said all of the ramps on the Dan Ryan had reopened except for Wentworth from 35th-37th Street exits.

Authorities said a truck leaking muriatic acid prompted the HazMat response.

No one was hurt, but commuters and fans leaving the White Sox game had to be re-routed.

Muriatic acid is used to clean bricks. The liquid inside the tank was 35 percent muriatic acid and 65 percent water, so emergency crews used additional water to suppress the threat.

Investigators believe a loose bolt caused the leak.
