Authorities Investigate Explosion in Northfield Home

An explosion at a house in suburban Northfield has prompted an investigation from area authorities Wednesday morning.

According to Tom Ahern with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the agency was called to assist Northfield police with an incident in the 400 block of Chapel Hill.

Police said they received a report of an "explosive incident" around 1:17 a.m. at the home.

ATF and Cook County bomb squad officers were at the scene as of 10 a.m. collecting evidence. It was not clear what caused the explosion but authorities said it appeared to be “some type of device.”

The exterior of the home was damaged, but no injuries were reported.

The homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous for safety concerns, said he was sleeping when he heard the blast, which blew out the windows of his guest room and sent debris into the home.

The homeowner said he believes he was targeted, but declined to comment further.

His wife, who was in New York at the time, returned home Wednesday morning after news of the blast. Her brother was expected to spend the night in the guest room, but ended up canceling those plans.

"We believe this was an isolated incident, with no threat to the community or our school system," Northfield Police Chief Wililam Lustig said in a statement.
