At Least 1 Killed in I-80 Crash: Officials

At least one person was killed in a fatal crash on Interstate 80 in Joliet Monday, according to officials.

The accident occurred on eastbound I-80 at Briggs around 5 p.m., according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Clare Pfotenhauer.

Police said the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet was traveling westbound on the interstate when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center median and drove into eastbound traffic. The vehicle then his a 2006 silver Volkswagon and a 2011 block Dodge Durango. 

The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 31-year-old David R. Zenteno from Des Moines, Iowa, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. The drivers of the Volkswagon and Dodge vehicles were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. 

Police said it was not immediately clear what caused Zenteno to lose control of the vehicle. 

Illinois State Police were on the scene investigating the crash for several hours and traffic was rerouted off the Interstate at Richards. By 7:45 p.m. all eastbound lanes were re-opened.
