Archbishop Cupich Meets With Pope Francis For First Time in Rome

Chicago's Archbishop Blase Cupich has finally met Pope Francis face to face.

Although the Pope appointed Cupich back in September to succeed Cardinal Francis George, the two had never met. The first meeting was to take place Monday, but once Cupich arrived in Rome he received word that Francis wanted to meet him sooner.

Cupich, along with more than 40 other archbishops will be recognized Monday as metropolitan archbishops receive the pallium – a piece of cloth worn over their vestments symbolizing their connection to the Pope.

The private meeting between Cupich and Francis took place at the Casa Santa Marta, where the Pope lives.

Cupich said he took the opportunity to "tell him about the many wonderful things happening in our local church and assured him of our support for his ministry of unity."

Cupich added the Pope asked for prayers from the Chicago Archdiocese.
