Chicago Suburbs Make List of Best Cities for Families

Naperville, Wheaton and Elgin were among the top cities in the nation

An apartment listing website has named three Chicago suburbs among the top cities in the nation to raise a family.

Naperville was the top-ranked Illinois city on the list of "Top Cities for Families," coming in third place. The rankings come from ApartmentList.com, which identified the top cities based on safety, housing cost, school quality and child friendliness.

The western suburb was the only Chicago suburb to make the top 10 and was lauded for the quality of its schools and received a perfect score in that category. The suburb also earned high rankings for safety.

Wheaton came in at no. 12 on the list of 100 cities, and was noted for its safety in particular. Like Naperville, Wheaton also scored high for school quality. The western suburb only failed to make the top 10 list nationally because of its low scores for housing costs and percentage of children, according to ApartmentList.

Elgin was also named in the national ranking, taking 62nd place. The northwestern suburb received high scores for its affordability in the housing category and its high percentage of residents under 18 years old.

Normal was the only other Illinois city to make the national list, coming in at no. 79.

The city of Fishers, Ind., near Indianapolis came in first place nationally followed by Allen, Texas.

As for the best cities in Illinois, Naperville takes the no. 1 spot, followed by Wheaton and Elgin, according to the rankings.

The top 10 family-friendly cities in Illinois, in order, were Naperville, Wheaton, Elgin, Normal, Bloomington, Waukegan, Champaign, Peoria, Decatur and Rockford.
