Another Southwest Flight With Engine Problem Aborts Takeoff at Midway

For the second time this week, a Southwest Airlines plane has aborted a takeoff at Chicago's Midway International Airport because of engine trouble.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory says the crew reported problems with one if its engines as the plane moved down the runway to begin its takeoff Friday morning. The FAA will investigate.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the Pilot in command of Flight 4384, Midway International Airport to Philadelphia International Airport, returned to the gate prior to takeoff after the Pilot of another Southwest aircraft reported seeing potential signs of a mechanical issue," Southwest Airlines said in a statement.

The airline company said it did not immediately find anything wrong with the aircraft but it remained in maintenance Friday morning. The 136 passengers on board traveled to Philadelphia on a new aircraft, arriving about two hours behind schedule.

There were no reports of any injuries.

A similar incident took place Wednesday night when a Southwest plane headed to Boston cut short its takeoff because of a mechanical issue. The Chicago Fire Department said one of that plane's engines caught fire.

On Thursday, passengers were unable to deplane for at least an hour after landing at Midway Airport after a "piece of equipment" hit a Southwest Airlines plane and the jetway.
