Another Illinois City Prohibits Teens From Tanning

Springfield aldermen approved a ban Tuesday by a vote of 7-3

Another major Illinois city will prohibit minors from using commercial tanning beds.

Springfield aldermen approved a ban Tuesday by a vote of 7-3. The State Journal-Register reports it applies whether or not minors have parental permission. The Chicago City Council passed a similar ban in June.

Tanning beds received media attention earlier this summer after a deeply tanned New Jersey woman was accused of allowing her 5-year-old daughter to use a tanning bed. She has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment.

The Springfield ban goes into effect Jan. 1 and doesn't apply to spray tans or tanning beds in private residences. The Sangamon County Medical Society endorsed the ban.

Illinois law bans children under age 14 from tanning at salons. Teens between 14 and 17 need parental consent.
