Air Guitar Heroes Ready to Rock

Contestants judged on "airness"

The finest of the faux face-melters are warming up their fingers to feign rocking in Chicago.

A mix of pros and amateurs will fiddle their fingers and go head-to-head when the U.S. Air Guitar Championships hits the Metro Thursday night, the Sun-Times reports.

In the first round, contestants choose theirs songs, whip out their invisible guitars and channel the heavy-metal gods for inspiration. If they're lucky enough to advance to the second round, the judges turn the tables and pick the tracks.  According to U.S. Air Guitar rules, hopefuls will be judged on technical merit, stage presence and "airness."

Thursday's regional winner will battle for the national glory against 15 other regional air guitar heroes at the finals in New York City July 22. William Ocean, two-time U.S. champion, will be there to defend his rockin' title.

The 2010 U.S. Air Guitar Championship winner will represent the red, white and blue against the world's best at the world championships in Oulu, Finland, August 25.

There's still time to sign-up for Thursday's regionals. But be prepared to shred like you never shredded before in the privacy of your home or parents' basement.
