Emergency crews combed the lakefront early Saturday near North Avenue Beach searching for a female thought to have fallen in the water, but who was later found safe at home.
About 2:50 a.m., the Chicago Fire Department received a call of a person in the water at North Avenue and the lakefront, Deputy District Chief of Marine and Dive Operations Ron Dorneker said.
A man was found at the scene, “who was able to get himself out of the water, but he told us that he was with a friend … and he believed she was still in the water,” Dorneker said.
For more than an hour, rescue crews searched by helicopter, land units, divers and surface rescue personnel but found nothing, Dorneker said.
The Chicago Police Department was informed after 4 a.m. that the female — whose age was not known Saturday morning — got out of the water and walked back to her residence on Lake Shore Drive, Dorneker said.
The man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
How the two fell in the Lake was not known, but they likely slipped or were blown off a pier by high winds, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

“The lakefront is not a friendly place during high winds and heavy waves,” Langford said.
