Activist Plan Protests for Chicago's G8 and NATO Summits

Organizers hope for tens of thousands of demonstrators

Both activists and the Chicago Police department are preparing for massive protests during next spring’s G8 and NATO summits.

Representatives from about 50 groups from across the U.S. and Canada met Sunday at the Chicago-Kent College of Law to strategize and start planning the protests.

Organizers hope to assemble tens of thousands of demonstrators at two large-scale protests and a march during the week-long world meetings, scheduled for mid-May.

Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has said the department is preparing to make mass arrests of protestors during that week.

the top cop will send representatives to Pittsburgh and Seattle to listen to strategies the police forces learned when the events were held there.

McCarthy also said he has put a deputy superintendent, Debra Kirby, in charge of the city's law enforcement preparations.
