AG Madigan Warns About Dangerous Toys Ahead of Holiday Season

Many of the toys included on the list pose potential choking hazards or have structural problems that could cause harm to a child if the toy falls apart

As the holiday shopping season gets underway, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan released her annual list of toys, clothing, cribs and furniture Monday that she says could be dangerous to children.

Among the list of toys recalled over the last year are a set of airplane and butterfly toys whose parts can detach and create a choking hazard, a children's mountain bike whose handlebars could become loose and cause the bike to crash and a Disney Store pencil case that has detachable magnets that can cause "serious internal injuries" if swallowed.

Many of the toys included on the list pose potential choking hazards or have structural problems that could cause harm to a child if the toy falls apart.

Several other children's items, including crib mattresses, window blinds, strollers and blankets, were also deemed dangerous for children.

In addition, Madigan named several children's clothing items on the list, many of them sleepwear that pose a flammability risk.

This year's list added an extra warning to parents about the risks of technology in the home. Madigan provided tips to create a safe "digital culture" in the home by reviewing websites, games and apps that children use and having discussions with them about the importance of passwords.

"Today's kids are interested and skilled in the latest technology," Madigan said. "While there are many benefits to our kids using technology, there are pitfalls and dangers every parent should be aware of. Luckily, implementing a few rules and practices can promote safe and positive online experiences for our children."
