McHenry County officials discovered nearly 100 animals at a residence in unincorporated Woodstock Monday.
Sheriff's deputies were called to the home in the 8600 block of Bull Run Trail for a well-being check on the homeowner.
The woman wasn't there, but deputies entered the home after noticing a strong odor. That's when they found 91 animals inside, including 19 dogs, 11 cats, 3 rabbits, 55 birds and a deceased dog, cat and bird.
Investigators say there was feces on the floor throughout the house and no visible signs of food or water available for the animals.
The 54-year-old homeowner was later found at a Park Ridge home, but charges have not been filed in the case as of Wednesday morning.
Animal control officials were tending to the animals in the home.
