2 Teens Charged After 8 Chicago Students Sickened by Suspected LSD

It's the second time in one week more than seven students have been sickened while taking a substance at a Chicago school

Two teens have been arrested after as many as Chicago Public Schools students at a North Side military high school got sick from taking a substance that police believe was LSD.

Officers were called to Rickover Naval Academy in the city's Edgewater neighborhood around 2 p.m. Wednesday when a student said they felt ill after ingesting what they believed was LSD they had purchased from another student. During the investigation, police said seven additional students also reported feeling ill.

Two 15-year-old boys were found to be in possession of what officers suspected was LSD. Both were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, authorities said Friday.

The affected students were taken by their parents for medical treatment. Police said the substance is being tested to determine if it was in fact LSD.

Last than a week earlier, at least seven students were hospitalized after taking a pill given to them by a fellow student at another Chicago school.

The students from Seward Communications Arts Academy Elementary School, at 4600 S. Hermitage Ave., complained of feeling sick after ingesting an unknown substance in pill form just before noon last Friday, according to authorities.

It was not immediately clear what exactly the students ingested, but authorities said an investigation is ongoing.

“[Chicago Public Schools] is taking this situation very seriously and our priority is to provide our students with a safe, healthy learning environment," the district said in a statement last week. "School administrators immediately contacted emergency personnel and families of the affected students, and the incident is being thoroughly investigated.”

CPS could not immediately be reached for comment Friday as the district was closed for Good Friday.
