Two people were taking into police custody Thursday after a driver tried to run over a police officer on the city's south side and shots were fired at the vehicle by officers, police said.

The ordeal began shortly after 11 a.m. when officer made a traffic stop near 75th and State streets, said police spokesman Jose Estrada.

The driver of the vehicle hit one of the officers with the vehicle, he said. That officer was not seriously injured.

Another officer fired shots at the vehicle as it took off, but no one was hit by the gunfire, Estrada said.

After a brief chase, the vehicle was again stopped near 78th and King Drive, and as of about 3 p.m., two people were being questioned by police.
