7 Hospitalized After Gas Leak at Chicago High School

Seven people were taken to hospitals after high carbon monoxide levels were discovered Wednesday morning at a high school in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

A high level of carbon monoxide was reported at Harper High School at 6520 S. Wood St., and prompted a HazMat response, according to Fire Media Affairs.

A natural gas leak casued an evacuation of the school at 10 a.m., police said.

Two people were taken to Holy Cross Hospital and two were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, Fire Dept. spokesman Will Knight said. Three others were also transported to hospitals. Unconfirmed scanner reports said the injured were all students.

Six people were in fair-to-serious condition and one person is in good condition, Knight said.

A Chicago Public Schools spokesperson did not immediately have information on the incident.
