60 Evacuated After Apartment Roof Collapses

Sixty residents in an Edgewater Beach apartment building were evacuated after part of the building’s roof collapsed Friday night, officials said.

The Chicago Fire Department was called to the scene around 6:50 p.m. in the 5900 block of North Kenmore, where they ordered the evacuation of 46 apartments.

Chicago Fire Media said at least 22 of the 60 evacuated residents will need assistance from Salvation Army to find shelter.

Officials said the rear roof of the five-story building collapsed due to work being done on the roof and all residents will be relocated until a structural engineer has assessed the building, according to fire media.

Crews from Peoples Gas and ComEd were also the scene Friday.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation, but officials said the building was secured by 10:45 p.m. Friday.

No injuries were reported, according to authorities.
