A police lieutenant says adults and children were around the pool area and a lack of supervision was not a factor in the drowning.
A 5-year-old girl apparently drowned Saturday night while surrounded by relatives at a gathering in southwest suburban Orland Park, police said.
Stephanie Harrison, of 53 Anchor Dr. in Oswego, was pronounced dead at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights at 7:55 p.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.
Police responded to the apparent drowning in the 7800 block of Palm Drive at 7:05 p.m., according to Orland Park police Lt. John Keating, who called the incident a "tragic accident."
Keating said the girl was swimming in an in-ground pool at the home during a family gathering when she drowned. He said adults and children were around the pool area and a lack of supervision was definitely not a factor in the drowning.
"It only takes a short period of time for someone to actually ingest the water and drown," Keating said.
An autopsy is scheduled for later Sunday.
