Chicago Area Feels Shakes After Southwest Michigan Earthquake

No injuries have been reported

The United States Geological Survey confirmed a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Michigan near the city of Galesburg Saturday.

The ground began to shake at about 11:23 a.m. CST, according to the USGS. Nearby cities affected by the earthquake include Portage, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Lansing.

The intensity of the quake was identified as moderate with potential damage described as "very light" by the USGS. The depth of the earthquake was 5.9 kilometers, or about 3.7 miles.

Reports of feeling some degree of shaking came from all over Michigan, as well as parts of northern Indiana. Residents in few parts of the Chicago area also reported feeling trembling, including residents in Evanston, Carol Stream, Romeoville, Joliet, Carpentersville, McHenry and Dundee.

No injuries have been reported.
