Could you live on $40 worth of food per week?

There's a new diet that's sweeping the country that has nothing to do with losing weight and everything to do with trying to live on a food budget.

Quick Poll

It started online, and it's called the "Hunger Challenge" or the "Food Stamp Diet."

Members of Congress are trying it in order to call attention to the state of food stamp benefits.

In Illinois, the maximum benefit is about $40 per week. That amount goes down as more people are added to a household, and roughly 400,000 Chicagoland residents live on that amount year-round.

The Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation and the Illinois Hunger Coalition serve millions of meals every year. Both organizations say they're seeing a dramatic rise in the demand for food.

  • Unemployed Sunday, Nov 9 at 12:49 AM FLAG COMMENT My husband and I have been working since we were 16 years old and I lost my job last November and him following me. I am married with 3 children and my husband and I have been looking for work for almost a year now with no luck. Food stamps have been our saving grace, but even if you do not buy junk food, which we don't, and buy a whole lot of chicken and ground beef for meals, you still have to figure in the fact that prices ... • Solution Saturday, Nov 8 at 2:11 PM FLAG COMMENT It is very hard to live within this economy. I believe that the welfare system should only be a stepping stone for people and that the government and state need to guide the system with stipulations of steps to get off of welfare and be independent from the system. For seniors, I feel that they should get the assistance just for the simple fact that they don't get enough from social security, etc and there should be limits a ... MORE >
