3 Men Shot at Peace Event on Near North Side: Police

Three men were shot at a Near North Side peace event, officials said, and organizers were disappointed that the event—designed to welcome children back to school—was marred by violence Saturday evening.

Event organizers say that a group of young men began fighting at the scene in the 300 block of West Division, and one of them opened fire, striking three bystanders who were not involved in the altercation.

Authorities said the victims were standing outside when three males between the ages of 15 and 20 years old opened fire on the group at approximately 5:57 p.m.

A 54-year-old man was shot in the upper right leg, a 43-year-old man was shot in the left lower left leg and upper right arm, and a 28-year-old man was shot in the back, police said.

The victims were all taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Two were in stable condition, police said, and the 28-year-old was in critical condition.

According to a police spokesman, a person of interest was taken in for questioning by authorities, but officials say the gunman may remain at large.
