3 Dead, 16 Wounded in Shootings in 12-Hour Span in Chicago

Three people were killed and at least 16 others were wounded within 12 hours in Chicago, police said.

The first fatality happened after 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 7500 block of South Ellis Street, police said. A 22-year-old man was shot multiple times in a possible drive-by shooting and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another man was killed in a shooting that wounded three others less than two blocks from the Chicago Police Department Headquarters.

The group was on the sidewalk near East 35th and South Prairie Avenue shortly before 8:30 p.m. when they were hit by bullets. Witnesses told NBC Chicago the shooting was a drive-by.

Two victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where they were immediately listed in serious to critical condition. A 52-year-old man was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Two other people were taken to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County. One was listed in serious to critical condition. The other was listed in fair condition, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson.

A woman was killed in a shooting around 11:30 p.m. near 75th Street and South Stewart Avenue.

Police said three women were shot after a dark-colored sedan pulled up alongside them and a shooter got out of the vehicle and opened fire.

A woman, whose age was not known, was shot in the armpit and pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center. A 22-year-old woman was shot in the stomach and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition and a 25-year-old woman was shot in the leg and wrist and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

About five minutes later, a woman and two teens were shot less than five blocks away.

A 41-year-old woman, a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl were all wounded some someone opened fire at them from a white sedan.

The woman was shot in the stomach and the 16-year-old boy was shot in the arm. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

The 14-year-old girl was shot in the back and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital also in serious condition.

Police said the two shooting may have been connected.

Eleven other people were injured in shootings since Tuesday afternoon.

  • Just before 2 a.m., a 58-year-old man was shot in the leg while leaving a bar in the 4200 block of West Leland Avenue. The man said he walked out of the bar and felt pain in his leg before realizing he had been shot. He was taken to Our Lady of Resurrection Hospital in fair condition, police said.
  • Just before 12:30 a.m., a man was shot in the 400 block of West Blackhawk in the city’s Old Town neighborhood. Police said the man was shot in the buttocks and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
  • Around midnight, a 20-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the foot in the 300 block of West 42nd Place. The man refused treatment at the scene. Details surrounding the shooting weren’t immediately available.
  • A 17-year-old boy was shot around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 7000 block of South Campbell. Police said the teen was playing with a handgun with his friend when he was shot in the finger. The teen walked into Holy Cross Hospital for treatment.
  • A 24-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the thigh in a shooting around 10:20 p.m. in the 200 block of North Keystone. The woman said she was standing outside when she heard shots and felt pain. She was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in good condition.
  • Around 10 p.m. two people were wounded in shooting in the 6700 block of South Ada. A 41-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were sitting in a van when someone drove by and fired shots into their vehicle. The man was shot in the ankle and the woman suffered a graze wound to her leg. Both were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition.
  • About 10 minutes earlier, a 19-year-old man was critically wounded in a shooting in the 2300 block of South Rockwell Street. The teen was walking down the street when a dark-colored SUV approached him and someone inside opened fire. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
