#VinnyDippin Invites Vince Vaughn to Take Polar Plunge

Social media campaign encourages actor to brave icy Lake Michigan waters

Could actor Vince Vaughn take the plunge?

Special Olympics Chicago recently launched social media campaign #VinnyDippin, inviting the Lake Forest native to participate in this year’s Polar Plunge on March 1 at North Avenue Beach. The invite comes a year after the city's Polar Plunge reached record numbers thanks to an appeareance from Swimmy, er, Jimmy Fallon.

“@VinceVaughn are you as ‪#‎CoolAsJimmy? Join us at the #ChicagoPolarPlunge on March 1 and support @SpecialOChi!‪#‎VinnyDippin!,” the Chicago Polar Plunge posted to Facebook Monday.

The annual event – now in its 15th year – brings Chicagoans and celebrity guests together to take a freezing dip in Lake Michigan and raise money for the Special Olympics.

Chicagoans and Vaughn fans are encouraged to pressure the actor by posting to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag.

Last year, the “Tonight Show” host, Fallon, took the plunge alongside Mayor Rahm Emanuel following the successful #SwimmyFallon social media campaign. Fallon and 3,200 other participants broke previous fundraising records with more than $1 million raised from the March 2, 2014 event.

“Vince Vaughn is the epitome of Chicago and would be the perfect celebrity to take on what Jimmy Fallon started last year,” said Casey Hogan, president of Special Olympics Chicago in a press release. “We all remember when Vince Vaughn jumped out of an airplane at The Chicago Air and Water Show a few years ago, so jumping in the lake to help people with disabilities should be easy in comparison!”

Although Fallon will “absolutely not” participate in the plunge again, a Special Olympics representative told the Sun-Times “the initial response looks like even more actors will be plunging this time around.”

Registration for this year’s plunge is still open.
