2013 Chicago Flower & Garden Show Blooms March 9-17

Show has roots in Chicago dating back to 1847

In need of some early spring? You needn't go beyond Navy Pier.

The annual Chicago Flower & Garden Show runs March 9 through March 17 featuring multiple rooms of plants and flowers, including thousands of hyacinths and what’s believed to be the first-ever U.S. exhibition of Ecuadorian roses.

This year's theme is "The Art of Gardening,” focused on breaking down the do's and don'ts of "curing the toughest horticulture headaches." Nearly two dozen "feature gardens" highlight angles from the World War Two Victory Gardens to a tribute to Dr. Seuss to a patio with an outdoor kitchen, pergola and three-season room.

Mariano’s Fresh Market hosts culinary demonstrations at the Garden Gourmet expo, featuring 34 of Chicago’s top chefs sharing their secrets. A Kid’s Activity Garden includes a playground for young gardeners to learn about flower care through hands-on experience. Daily “make and take” workshops teach tricks to creating floral arrangements.

As many as 50,000 visitors are expected at the show which has roots in Chicago beginning in 1847.

Tickets are available at the Navy Pier Box Office and online at chicagoflower.com. Weekday admission is $17 at the box office and $15 online. Weekend admission is $17 online and $19 at the box office.

The show runs 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.
