$200K Bond for DUI Driver in Crash That Killed Girlfriend

Driver's blood alcohol level three times legal limit

A judge set bond at $200,000 for an Orland Park man accused of reckless homicide and driving under the influence in a crash early Thursday morning that killed his 20-year-old girlfriend.

Nick Sord, 22, a business partner of Blackhawks star Denis Savard, was driving his Mercedes SUV west on 147th Street near Oak Park Ave Thursday morning when he lost control of the vehicle, struck a light pole, then careened into a ditch and partially rolled over.

Jessica Majia, 20, of New Lenox and a student at the University of Illinois Chicago, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sord's blood-alcohol level was 0.236, nearly four times the legal limit for driving, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

The accident happened around 4:20 a.m. Thursday when the Mercedes SUV Sord was driving hit a light pole, went into a ditch and rolled over, police said. Sord and Mejia were not wearing seat belts, according to the statement.

Sord told investigators he was out with friends earlier that night before picking up Mejia and heading home.

Sord will remain in police custody until his bond hearing Saturday at the Markham courthouse.
