Two men are in custody after gunshots erupted as Will County Sheriff’s officers executed a narcotics search warrant Tuesday night.

The officers had just arrived in the 200 block of Richards Street in Joliet around 8:30 p.m. along with Joliet police and set up a perimeter around a home, according to Deputy Chief Dan Jungles.

They knocked on a back door and announced themselves when shots were fired from inside the home, striking both officers.

One sheriff’s officer was hit in the side but was saved by his bullet-proof vest. The second officer suffered a graze wound to his left arm. Both were taken to Silver Cross Hospital where they were treated and released.

After the shooting, the suspects ran out of the front of the home, where they were caught by police, Jungles said.

Charged were pending as of Wednesday morning.
