2-Year-Old Falls Down Hotel Elevator Shaft

A 2-year-old suffered severe head injuries Sunday after he fell down an elevator shaft at a Joliet hotel, police say. The boy is in critical condition.

Around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the boy apparently left his room at Plaza Hotel, 26 W. Clinton St., and began playing with the elevator buttons, police say. The elevator moved and then stopped, creating a 10-inch gap between the elevator and the wall.

He fell 30 feet from the second floor to the basement through the gap.

The boy was flown from Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet to Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
