A driver has been cited after a 2-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle Sunday on Chicago's Northwest Side.

Police say Alexander Vasquez Jr. was issued five traffic citations, including ones for failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failulre to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The 2-year-old boy, identified as Noah Katz of Chicago, and a 39-year-old woman were struck at 4:11 p.m. in the Jefferson Park neighborhood by a vehicle traveling south in the 4700 block of North Central Avenue after turning left from westbound Giddings Street, authorities said.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Police initially said the child was a girl.

The woman was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, police said. Her condition was stabilized.

Witnesses at the scene told reporters the vehicle was a white van making a left turn onto Central. A nurse who was nearby when the crash occurred performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived.

The driver was taken into custody after the crash but did not show signs of impairment and was not arrested, police said.
