Suspect Caught After 2 McHenry County Officers Shot

"Scott Peters should be considered armed and dangerous and may be armed with a rifle," police said

A suspect has been caught hours after two officers were shot in suburban Holiday Hills early Thursday during a standoff, police said.

The McHenry County Sheriff's deputies responded around 1:30 a.m. to a home in the 1300 block of West Northeast Shore Drive for a well-being check related to a domestic situation. The call came from outside the home, police said. That person is believed to have been an out-of-state relative of a person inside the home.

When the officers responded, the suspect opened fire and they were struck, Deputy Sheriff Aimee Knop said.

Two residents were able to get out of the home, Knop said, and several homes in the subdivision were evacuated.

The suspect was identified as 52-year-old Scott B. Peters (below).

"Scott Peters should be considered armed and dangerous and may be armed with a rifle," police said in a statement Thursday morning. "Peters is currently wanted for 2 counts of Attempted Murder and 2 counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm."

Officials announced just after 5 p.m. that Peters was "safely in custody."

Police said Peters, a military veteran, was located at 176th Street and Smith Road and was arrested by three deputies who were called to the scene after two neighbors reported seeing a man fitting his description.

Peters was found unarmed and police said they were searching for the alleged weapon in a small area where they believed it may have been disposed of.

The wounded officers were transported to area hospitals, where one, a 12-year veteran deputy, was listed in stable condition and the other, a 7-year veteran deputy, in stable but critical condition.
