3 Killed, 21 Wounded in Weekend Shootings

Three men were killed and 21 others wounded, including a man who was shot while driving on the Dan Ryan

Three people were killed and at least 21 others were injured in weekend shootings on the South and West Sides between Friday night and Sunday morning.

The most recent fatal shooting happened Sunday afternoon in the South Chicago neighborhood.

At about 12 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was walking in the 8200 block of South Houston when a person approached on foot and opened fire, striking the teen in the abdomen, police said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to police. The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the death.

About 11:40 p.m. Friday, Charles Wright, 39, was shot in the abdomen in the 5300 block of South Hoyne in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died, police said.

About 10 p.m. Friday night, two men were shot – one fatally – in the Austin neighborhood, police said. The two were standing in a yard in the 5500 block of West Corcoran when multiple people fired shots from a sidewalk.

Denzell Franklin, 23, was shot in the face and armpit and was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:43 p.m., according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The other man, 24, walked to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park with a gunshot wound to the arm, police said. His condition had stabilized late Friday night.

Two people were taken into custody in connection with the shooting, but their ages and genders were not immediately known.

There were at least 21 other nonfatal shootings between Friday night and Sunday morning, including four teenagers, according to police.

  • A male was shot while driving on the Dan Ryan Expressway late Friday. A car could be seen parked near 75th and Eggleston late Friday with at least three bullet holes on the driver’s side, as well as two broken windows and a flat tire.
  • Two men, including an off-duty Cook County sheriff's officer, were shot within 10 minutes in the neighboring South Side communities of Gresham and Auburn Gresham.
  • At about 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, someone tried to rob a 34-year-old sheriff's officer in the 7900 block of South Paulina and shot him in the hand.
  • Around 9:40 p.m. Friday, two teen girls, 14 and 15, were shot in the South Shore neighborhood.
  • A boy, 13, was shot Saturday evening in the Englewood neighborhood
  • A boy, 16, was shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in the 4800 block of South Hermitage at about 8:40 p.m. Friday.
  • A man, 31, was shot in the neck at about 4:25 a.m. in the 2200 block of West 69th St.
  • At about 3:50 p.m. Saturday, officers found a man, 21, lying on a sidewalk in the 8900 block of South Carpenter with gunshot wounds to his leg and shoulder.
  • A man, 42, was shot and critically wounded at about 3:20 p.m. Saturday in the West Pullman neighborhood in the Far South Side.
  • A man, 32, was shot in the chest at a West Englewood party in the 7000 block of South Wolcott at about 11:40 p.m. Friday.
  • A man, 31, was shot in the 2400 block of West Lexington at about 3 a.m. Saturday.
  • A man, 24, was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood in the 12200 block of South Halsted at about 5 a.m. Saturday.
  • A male was shot in the 6400 block of South Washtenaw at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday.

Area detectives are investigating.
