2 Charged with Attempted Robbery, Shooting Off-Duty Police Officer

The officer was approached by three males and began "sensing something was wrong"

Two men were ordered held without bail Sunday after being charged with shooting an off-duty Chicago police officer in an attempted robbery early Friday on the South Side.

Jordan Bailey and Abdourahmane Soumare, both 19, were charged in connection with the 12:50 a.m. attempted robbery and shooting near the 7400 block of South Langley, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

Bailey, of the 15300 block of South Drexel Avenue, faces one count of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of attempted armed robbery with the discharge of a firearm, one count of aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm, all felonies, police said.

Soumare, of the 700 block of East 79th Street, was charged with one count of aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm, attempted armed robbery with a firearm, attempted robbery with the discharge of a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said.

A 41-year-old officer was sitting in his car when he was approached by three males, Chicago Police Department First Deputy Superintendent Al Wysinger said in a briefing.

The officer, “sensing something was wrong,” began to drive away when he was shot once, Wysinger said. He suffered a through-and-through gunshot wound to his chest, police said.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the officer drove away after two people tried to open his passenger door.

The officer continued driving until he flagged down a marked squad car and officers drove him to the University of Chicago Medical Center, Wysinger said.

Once the officer’s condition had stabilized, he was taken by ambulance to Mount Sinai Hospital, Wysinger said. He was “awake and alert” as of 3:15 a.m.

“He’s alert, he’s talking, he’s a very, very lucky officer at this point,” Wysinger said.

Marty Maloney, deputy director of police News Affairs, said the officer was listed in “serious but stable” condition.

The officer, an eight-year Chicago Police Department veteran, has received 22 departmental awards and is stationed in the 3rd District -- the same one he was shot in -- according to Wysinger and a police statement.
