A 16-year-old boy has been charged with accidentally shooting two teens Wednesday night in west suburban Aurora.
The teen, whose name was not released because of his age, was charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID card, reckless discharge of a firearm, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon while under the age of 21, according to a statement from Aurora police.
Officers responded to Presence Mercy Medical Center at 11:42 p.m. for two gunshot victims, according to police. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the hand and an 18-year-old boy was shot in the leg.
Both were treated and released for minor wounds, police said.
They told investigators they were with a friend at a home in the 500 block of Howard Street when the handgun “went off,” police said. One bullet apparently struck the first teen in the hand and went on to strike the second teen in the leg.
The victims gave various accounts of what and where the shooting occurred before finally telling police who shot them. Police said the shooting did not appear to have been intentional.
Officers went to the teen’s home and arrested him, police said. He is being held at the Kane County Youth Home. The gun was not recovered.
