Boy, 13, Unintended Target in Shooting: Police

Darius Brown was shot in the chest while playing basketball at Metcalf Park, officials say

A teen playing basketball was the unintended target of gunfire that erupted Wednesday afternoon in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, police said.

Darius Brown, 13, was shot in the chest at 5:20 p.m. on the 4200 block of South State Street while playing basketball at Metcalf Park.

Police said it appears a car drove by and opened fire.

Brown's older sister said her brother loved basketball and played at the park every day. She and her family are stunned by what happened.

"You read about it. You hear it on the news. You pray that it stops, but when it affects home you really feel it," said Paris Morrison.

The boy, who will soon be an 8th grader at  Holy Angel Catholic School, was taken to Comer Children's Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Family members said they're trying to stay strong for the boy, but said they're simply fed up with violence and gun fire in the city.

"It's sad because of the violence that's going on. He was innocent." said Morrison.
