60 Fall Ill at Evanston Retirement Home

Norovirus spreads to residents, staff

Health department officials are trying to figure out the cause of a virus spreading through an Evanston retirement home.

More than 60 residents and staff at North Shore Retirement Hotel have fallen sick since March 19th, according to a release received by the Chicago Tribune.

The culprit was identified as Norovirus, which typically spreads person-to-person through contaminated food or water or by touching contaminated surfaces the Tribune reported.

The symptoms, which typically go away in a couple of days, include stomach cramping, vomiting or diarrhea, but can be more severe in children and seniors.

It's not clear what caused the outbreak, but the Health Department is asking any other facilities who notice similar illnesses to call 847-866-2962.
