James Tyree Laid to Rest

Chicago Sun-Times chairman dies following medical accident

A who's who of Chicago remembered Chicago Sun-Times Chairman James Tyree Monday night at a memorial service at the Old St. Patrick’s Church.

The 53-year-old CEO of Mesirow Financial died following a medical accident in the hospital where he was being treated for stomach cancer and pneumonia.

The funeral service began wth a rendition of Earth Wind and Fire's "Shining Star," which Tyree often sang at office parties, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

He was eulogized by his childhood friend, Tom Finn, who said he could tell back in their days in Beverly that Tyree was special.

"Despite all of his success he never changed. It never went to his head. He was still Ty, a regular guy," Finn said.

Tyree is survived by his wife, Eve, and his children, Jessica, Joseph and Matthew.

Tyree was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip.
