An employee of a sandwich shop on the city's northwest side was in critical condition Thursday night after being shot in the neck during a robbery attempt, officials said.

The woman in her 40s was working at the Subway restaurant, at 1129 N. Western Ave., when someone walked in and attempted to rob the place at about 8:50 p.m., said police spokesman Daniel O’Brien said.

The woman was taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

No one was in custody as of 10 p.m., but Harrison Area detectives are investigating.
