Hotel Evacuated During HazMat Response in Rosemont

One person was taken to an area hospital in the incident, officials confirmed

A hotel in suburban Rosemont was evacuated during a HazMat situation on Thursday, authorities confirmed.

Just before 4:30 p.m., an employee at the front desk of the Hampton Inn in the 9400 block of W Higgins Road called 911 to report a fire in a guest room, the Rosemont Public Safety Department said in a release.

The fire was extinguished before fire officials arrived at the scene, authorities said, but while they investigated the incident, "suspicious materials" were discovered inside the room.

All guests in the hotel's 158 rooms were evacuated and relocated to another property owned by the hotel. A Hazardous Material Box Alarm was activated and some guests could be seen being hosed off by the fire department outside the hotel.

One person was taken to an area hospital, authorities confirmed. No further information on the victim's injuries or condition was immediately available. No other injuries were reported.

Two people are in custody and Rosemont Detectives are treating the incident as a criminal matter, officials said.
