1 Man Dead, 2 Hospitalized in South Suburban Harvey Crash

The fatal accident happened on 159th Street when a truck driver attempted to make a left turn

A crash involving a car and a semi-truck in south suburban Harvey left one man dead and two others injured Wednesday night.

The fatal accident happened on around 11:30 pm on 159th Street and Center Avenue when a truck driver attempted to make a left turn, and a nearby Nissan Maxima crashed directly under the trailer, according to city spokesperson Sean Howard.

A man from Calumet City in his 20s sitting in the back seat of the Nissan died, and the car's driver and an additional front seat passenger were taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center and John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. The passengers may have been sleeping when the driver crashed.

Both the surviving victims are also males in their 20s. The driver of the truck was not hurt.

Speed was a factor in the crash, according to Howard. The driver was going 60 to 75 miles an hour leading up to the fatal accident. Police also believe the driver may have been texting.

"The cell phone was found underneath the wheel on the floor of the driver's side," Howard said. Investigators have subpoenaed the phone records to track the last texts.

It is not yet known whether the three men were wearing seatbelts at the time.
