Two Chicago police officers opened fire on a man they saw shoot at someone else Thursday afternoon in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the city’s West Side, police said.
The shooting occurred in the 4200 block of West Madison Street about 5 p.m. No officers were injured and an “offender” took himself to the hospital, police said. Police later said a 9-year-old boy received "minor injuries" when a bullet shattered a car's windshield.
Police said it is believed the glass was shattered by the "initial shooting."
Police said two officers happened upon an argument between two men outside a store and witnessed one of them pulling a weapon on the other. The officers fired on the gunman who took cover before dropping two weapons and being taken into custody, police said.
"The Officers took a tactical position, engaged the gun man and fired multiple rounds, the gunman was not struck," police said in a statement. "A short time later, an additional adult male appeared at an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower body, and is in stable condition."
Police said the circumstances on how the man was shot are under investigation.
One of the officers was taken to the hospital to be treated for anxiety, police said.
Both officers have been on the force for five years.
