4 Dead, 13 Wounded in Weekend Chicago Shootings

At least four people were killed and 13 others were hurt in gun violence attacks across Chicago since Friday, police said.

The weekend’s first homicide occurred just before 8 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of South Central Avenue when a 36-year-old man was shot during an argument with another man. The victim was arguing with a man when the offender pulled out a gun, police said.

The victim was shot several times while trying to run across the street to escape the gunfire, according to authorities.

The 36-year-old man, identified as Louis Wherry, of the 200 block of South Central Avenue, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds to his abs, back, left arm and left buttocks, officials said.

The latest homicide took place when a man, believed to be in his late 20s, was found dead in an alley in the 7600 block of South Carpenter Street around 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

The man sustained a wound to his throat, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Dan O'Brien.

Police are conducting a homicide investigation in the incident, O'Brien said.

The most recent shooting took place Saturday on the city's South Side in the 11000 block of South Vernon Street.

Around 10:35 p.m. a 46-year-old and a 21-year-old man were standing outside when a dark-colored vehicle drove by and fired several shots, police said.

The 46-year-old man was struck in the head and ultimately pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

The 21-year-old man was last listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the neck.

Around 2:20 p.m. Saturday, two men were shot in the 11700 block of South Morgan Street, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Dan O'Brien.

A man, 19, was shot in the head and taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, officials said.

Another victim, also a 19-year-old man, was shot in the foot, O'Brien said.

Earlier on the South Side, police said two men were shot around 11:50 a.m. in the 6400 block of South Paulina. A 23-year-old man was shot in the chest and taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger Hospital and a 22-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and taken in good condition to Stroger Hospital.

Also Saturday, around 2 a.m., a 23-year-old man was walking to a party in the 3200 block of West Maypole Avenue when he got into an argument with a male offender, police said.

The man pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the abdomen and buttocks and fled the scene, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

On Friday, at least seven other people were shot.

A 25-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and right knee around 9:10 p.m. while he was standing on the sidewalk in the 1800 block of West 58th Street.

The man, who is on parole, was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, Estrada said.

Around 7:30 p.m., three people were shot near 69th Street and Harvard Avenue.

Three men were standing on the sidewalk in the 6900 block of South Harvard Avenue when a four-door sedan drove up and a passenger fired several shots at the group, Estrada said.

A 39-year-old man was shot in the left leg and taken to Cook County Hospital in stable condition. A 25-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the face and was listed in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and an 18-year-old man was shot in the right thigh and listed in stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

About an hour earlier, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the 7400 block of North Hoyne Avenue while riding his bike, police said.

The boy was on his bike when a man exited a silver minivan and shot at him, striking him in the lower back and left knee, Estrada said.

He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in stable condition, officials said.

The first weekend shooting took place around 5:30 p.m. Friday when a 16-year-old girl and 22-year-old man were shot while sitting on a porch in the 3900 block of West Arthington Street, authorities said.

The 16-year-old was shot in the right knee and the 22-year-old was shot in the right leg. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, police said.
