A man was killed and four others critically injured in a crash Sunday morning that shut down both directions of the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94).

As of about 8:25 a.m., all northbound lanes of the expressway remained closed around the scene of the accident.

The crash happened about 4:20 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway near 26th Street, according to an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper.

Five people were extricated from the pin-in crash, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Kevin MacGregor.

An adult male was killed in the crash, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Four others were critically injured in the crash, MacGregor said. Two were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and two were taken John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

All local northbound and southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan were closed following the crash. The southbound lanes were reopened by 5:45 a.m., but as of about 8:25 a.m. the northbound lanes remained closed, a trooper said.

State police continued to investigate the crash into the morning.
