1 Dead, 2 Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-80

A Chicago man was killed and two others hurt in a four-vehicle crash that closed the eastbound lanes of I-80 near south suburban Hazel Crest for about three hours during the Friday afternoon rush.

The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near Kedzie Avenue, Illinois State Police said.

A Toyota SUV rear-ended a Dodge car, causing a chain-reaction collision that also involved two other cars, a Pontiac and a Hyundai, a statement from ISP said.

The driver of the Dodge was killed, and the drivers of the Toyota and Hyundai were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Walter Blockmon, 50, was pronounced dead at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest at 2:22 p.m., a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. Blockmon lived in the 8200 block of South Evans Avenue in Chicago, authorities.

The driver and a passenger in the Pontiac were not hurt, police said.

All eastbound lanes of I-80 were closed Friday afternoon with traffic diverted onto I-57. All lanes were reopened again as of 4:30 p.m., ISP said.
