1 Dead, 23 Injured in Chicago Weekend Shootings

One person was killed and at least 23 others were injured in weekend shootings across Chicago, including a drive-by shooting that left six people injured in the city's Uptown neighborhood.

The weekend's most recent shooting took place in the city's West Englewood Sunday evening when a young mother and her 2-year-old son were shot, police said. 

The shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of West 73rd Street, according to authorities.

The 27-year-old mother was shot in the arm and her young son suffered a gunshot wound to leg, police said. The mother was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and her son was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Both were listed in stable condition as of Sunday night, officials said.

The first shooting to occur during the weekend took place Friday evening.

Shots rang out in at about 7:15 p.m. Friday in the 4800 block of North Sheridan Road in Chicago’s north side Uptown neighborhood, a fire department spokesperson said.

Five ambulances responded to the scene and a total of six people were injured, officials said. All were in good condition, according to a police spokesperson.

Nearly two hours later, an 18-year-old man was shot around 9:08 p.m. Friday in the 2800 block of West Arthington Street in the Lawndale neighborhood.

The teen was standing on the sidewalk when a male offender approached on foot and shot him in the groin, back and neck, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was not known, Zala said.

No one was in custody and the shooting remained under investigation Saturday.

Multiple reports Saturday claimed the teen was identified as the suspect in a double murder from earlier Friday.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that a police source confirmed the injured man was a suspect in the murder of 5-year-old Sterling Sims and his mother Chevonne Brown, 31.

Around 2:20 a.m. Saturday a 27-year-old man was shot in the 1400 block of North Springfield Avenue. The man was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the upper right shoulder and was last listed in serious condition, according to police.

A 24-year-old man was shot around 3 a.m. in the 3900 block of West Fullerton Avenue, police said.

The man was driving a minivan in the Logan Square neighborhood on the northwest side when a dark-colored sedan opened fire striking him in the lower left side, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

The man drove himself to Norwegian-American Hospital but was transferred to John H. Stroger Hospital shortly after.

An hour later, a 28-year-old man was killed in the 100 block of West 116th Street, police said.

The man was standing with a group of people when an unknown offender shot him from across the street.

The man was struck in the head and chest and pronounced dead at the scene, Estrada said.

Later Saturday, a 30-year-old man was shot in the 2500 block of East 104th Street around 7 p.m., officials said.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with a wound to his left side. His condition was not immediately known Sunday morning.

Hours later, a shooting in the 200 block of East 47th Street left a 24-year-old man shot in the elbow.

The man was standing in a parking lot when two men approached on foot and shot at him, Estrada said.

The man was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center with a wound to the elbow. He was last listed in good condition, Estrada said.

Around 11 p.m., a 16-year-old man was approached by a group of five men in the 114 block of South Halsted Street. The teen attempted to run from the group but said he heard gunshots and felt pain, Estrada said.

He was taken to Roseland Community Hospital with a wound to his left foot and was in stable condition, police said.

Around the same time, a 32-year-old man standing in the second floor landing of a building in the 200 block of West 112th Place was shot in the right ankle.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition, police said.

Sunday’s first shooting occurred around 1 a.m. when a 23-year-old man was shot near Central Avenue and Washington Street, police said.

The incident took place in the 5500 block of West Washington Street and the man was driven by a family member to West Suburban Medical Center with a wound to his right foot, Estrada said.

Less than 30 minutes later, a shooting occurred in the 4400 block of South Wells Street, injuring an 18-year-old man.

The teen was leaving a party when a gray minivan fired shots at him, injuring him in the left leg. He was driven to University of Chicago Hospital by friends but his condition was not immediately known, according to authorities.

Around 3 a.m., a man believed to be in his 20s was shot in the 4500 block of South Wallace Street. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a wound to his leg and was last listed in stable condition, police said.

Details surrounding the shooting were not immediately available.

Nearly 15 minutes later, a 21-year-old man was shot in the 4100 block of West 47th Street. A black sedan drove by the man, who was standing on the sidewalk, and fired several shots, striking him in the hand, police said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition.

Around 3:50 a.m. a man was shot in the right calf in the 4400 block of West Congress Parkway.

The 17-year-old was standing on the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain, police said.

He was driven to Loretto Hospital by a family member.

Later Sunday, a 40-year-old man was shot around 11:20 p.m. on the  city's far south side Sunday.

The shooting took place in the 1300 block of West 108th Street where the man was shot in the left shoulder.

He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition, according to Officer Estrada.

Few details were avialable on the shooting because the wounded man, who has known gang ties, was not cooperating with investigators, police said.

As of Sunday afternoon, no one was in custody for the shooting.

Around 3:20 p.m. in the 2400 block of East 75th Street, police said.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the head and was in critical condition, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

Details surrounding the shooting or where the man was transported were not immediately available.
