4 Dead, 18 Wounded in Easter Weekend Shootings

The victims of the fatal shootings were a 16-year-old boy and a 42-year-old man

Four people were killed and at least 18 others wounded in shootings across Chicago throughout the weekend.

The most recent fatality happened Saturday afternoon in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

Milon L. Carvis, 42, was standing on the sidewalk about 4:15 p.m. with several other adults in the 7800 block of South Seeley when a male walked up and fired shots, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. The shooter then ran away eastbound.

Carvis was shot in the torso and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:07 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 8400 block of South Hoyne Avenue, according to the medical examiner’s office.

About four hours earlier, a teenage boy was found shot to death in the West Englewood neighborhood.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 6500 block of South Marshfield at 12:18 p.m. found 16-year-old Martell J. Lawrence unresponsive on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.

Lawrence, of the 1700 block of West Marquette, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:47 p.m., authorities said.

Police said he had documented gang affiliations and a history of arrests.

Friday afternoon, a man was shot to death in Englewood.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 2 p.m. in the 7000 block of South Normal Avenue found 18-year-old Azun Buckner with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Buckner, of the 6900 block of South Eggleston, was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital where he later died, authorities said.

A police source said he was a documented gang member.

About 11:30 a.m. Friday, a 22-year-old man was fatally shot while walking near Washington Park.

Jerome Anderson was walking in the 5800 block of South King Drive when a gold vehicle pulled up and an armed male suspect got out, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The suspect opened fire then drove off.

Anderson, of the 7900 block of South Wabash, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, authorities said.

A police source said he was a documented gang member, and was on parole at the time of the shooting.

Other shootings include:

  • A 17-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to the buttocks at about 6 p.m. Friday after someone fired shots in the 5100 block of South Champlain in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood. The boy was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in good condition, police said. 
  • A 20-year-old man was shot in the chin at about 6:15 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of East 71st Street in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. He was walking in the block when another man approached him and fired shots, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 25-year-old man was shot in the back at about 12:20 p.m. Saturday near 114th and Church in the Morgan Park neighborhood. The man took himself to Roseland Community Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.
  • A 17-year-old boy was shot in the arm at about 8:25 p.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of East 100th Street in the South Deering neighborhood. He was walking down the block when someone in a group of people walking behind him opened fire, police said. The boy was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition.
  • A 16-year-old boy was shot in the left leg during a drive-by shooting at about 9:45 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of North Sawyer in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The boy was standing on the sidewalk when a dark-colored SUV drove past and someone inside opened fire, police said. The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized. 
  • A 31-year-old man was shot in the arm at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the 6000 block of South Laflin in the West Englewood neighborhood. The man took himself to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.
  • A 19-year-old man was shot in the buttocks at about 2:50 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of North Latrobe in the Austin neighborhood. The man was outside when some approached him and fired a shot, police said. The victim was taken to Loretto Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 25-year-old man was shot in the leg in a drive-by shooting at about 4:55 a.m. Sunday in the 4600 block of West Diversey in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. The man was walking on the sidewalk when somebody in a passing car fired shots at him, police said. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.
  • A man whose age was unknown was shot in the leg at about 11:40 a.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of West Cermak Road in the Lawndale neighborhood. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.
