1 Critically Hurt in Starved Rock Fall

A 20-year-old and 21-year-old fell 35 to 40 feet, police said

Four people were charged with underage drinking after two Lockport area residents fell 35 to 40 feet early Sunday at Starved Rock State Park.

A 20-year-old and 21-year-old were with a group of people when they fell at 4:36 a.m. in the French Canyon area of the park, said Sgt. Robert Frazier.

Andrew J. Dusek was air lifted in critical condition to St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Gerard J. Ziomek told police he'd fallen into a canyon but was not injured.

Dusek, who police said was found highly intoxicated and walking with a limp, was charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor, unlawful entry in a restricted area and possession of alcohol in a restricted area.

Three others -- John J. Strickland, 21; Vincent Piazza, 20; and Tracy A. Wagner, 20; also were charged with underage drinking. Strickland and Piazza were charged with possession of alcohol in a restricted area as well.

Frazier said drinking played a major role in the incident. He said he hasn’t seen a fall of this magnitude at the park in a long time.
