Comedian Steve Harvey is used to making people laugh on his morning radio show. But on Monday, he was talking turkey and making them smile.

In suburban Markham, the syndicated radio host was on hand for his second annual turkey giveway, which helps hundreds of area families get a head start on Thanksgiving.

"We had a tough year this year, but we're still blessed," Harvey said after the event.

The stop in Markham is one in over 50 cities, up from just 10 last year. Lines stretched around the building and people waited for a couple hours to receive one of the 1,000 turkeys being given away.

"I just want to thank Steve Harvey and his wife for this lovely turkey and for coming out to the community, and we enjoy him today," one woman said.

"Things have snowballed because there was always the ones out there that could not afford (to buy turkeys), but the list have grown bigger because people have lost their jobs, lost their homes," Markham Mayor David Webb said.

The Harveys also gave away turkey sausage Monday afternoon on the city's Web side. In all, they're donating 6,000 turkeys.

Harvey said he'd like to see that number double next year.
