Guns Stolen from Harvey PD Recovered

Weapons cache was reported stolen from gun range over the weekend

Several of the weapons reported stolen from a south suburban gun range have been recovered.

Acting Harvey police chief Denard Eaves said Wednesday that "many" of the 21 weapons stolen from a gun range operated by the department over the weekend were found at about 2:30 p.m. in a wooded area.  Illinois State Police officers were handling the recovery.

The weapons stolen included MP5 and AR-15 assault rifles, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday

Eaves said they were "mixed ownership."

"They were police officers' private weapons and Harvey weapons," he said, adding that "persons of interest" were being sought.

Cook County Sheriff's police launched an independent investigation Tuesday, but pulled out after just a few hours.  Department spokesman Steve Patterson said the officers were unable to work without being influenced by Harvey police officers.

Eaves said he's spoken to county officials and has "no issues with the Cook County Sheriff's Department."

This article previously reported that "persons of interest" were in custody.  We regret the error.
