A friend's essay has earned a Cicero high school teacher the honor of being named an "extraordinary educator" in a contest to find 12 of the nation's best teachers.

Eileen McCormack-Nicodemus teaches freshman history and english at J. Sterling Morton High School, and was described as "a teacher that I wish I would've had as a student," by a former colleague.

The EXPO Extraordinary Educator campaign was designed to recognize exceptional teachers who go above and beyond what is required of them. The maker of dry erase markers, whiteboards and accessories

McCormack-Nicodemus will receive a $500 cash prize, $500 worth of classroom supplies from EXPO and an interactive whiteboard system.

"We recognized that teachers spend a significant amount of their own money to purchase classroom supplies and we wanted to help out,” EXPO's global director for marketing, Steve Gradman, said in a news release. "But obviously what’s most important is embodied in these essays. It has been very inspirational for us to read the personal accounts of how teachers positively influence the lives of their students, not only in the classroom but throughout their lives."
