Teen Killed in Dolton Shooting an Innocent Bystander, Cops Say

A boy shot and killed just minutes after his south suburban high school let out for the day on Monday is believed to be just an innocent bystander to the shooting, police said.

Destin Hernandez was shot in the face while he and his friend were standing in front of Baba's Famous Steak and Lemonade at East Sibley Boulevard and Oak Street near Thornridge High School in Dolton when shots rang out at about 2:35 p.m., officials said.

He was taken to St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, Ind., where he later died.  His aunt says he was an honor student and an artist who had won several scholarships.

"And as the weather breaks, here it is again, more violence.  And that is my concern," said his former principal, Michael Winston."

Another man was wounded in the lower right calf and is in fair condition at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey. His injury is not of a life-threatening nature, police said.

Police are investigating the adult victim's role in the shooting.  Dolton police Lt. Harry Blaundin said he may have been among two opposing groups

Illinois State Police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are assisting Dolton police in the search for the offender or offenders.
