Chicago's South Suburban Humane Society must hold onto the more than 50 designer dogs rescued from a purported puppy mill in Kankakee County.
Associate Judge James Kinzer on Thursday granted an emergency request for a temporary injunction, the Kankakee Daily Journal reported, at the request of a lawyer for sisters Pat Gorecki and Karen Brownfield. Criminal charges have not been filed against either woman.
The injuction bars the shelter from selling or adopting out any of the dogs.
Fifty-two dogs, many of them suffering from hair loss, urine burns, sores, eye issues and flea dermatitis, were rescued last Friday from a shed after authorities executed a search warrant. One dog, a female Yorkshire Terrier, had to have a broken leg amputated.
Humane investigators working with law enforcement said the dogs were living in cruel and neglectful conditions.
