Road rage may be have ultimately resulted in a Chicago Transit Authority bus crashing into a building in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood Monday afternoon.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of a black SUV heading west on Chicago Avenue felt a car ahead was traveling too slowly. The SUV crossed into the eastbound lane of traffic and into the path of the bus, authorities said.
The bus swerved, but struck another car before crashing into the building, at 3645 W. Chicago Ave, CTA spokeswoman Wanda Taylor said.
The SUV stopped about a bloack up the street because of apparent radiator damage, a witness said.
Two people, the bus driver and the driver of one of the cars, were seriously injured and transported to Stroger Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Ten others were taken to St. Mary's Hospital, West Suburban Hospital, Loretto Hospital and Norwegian American Hospital.
No pedestrians were injured.
The building -- the Rowe-Clark Math and Science Academy -- is structurally sound, officials said.
"The school was occupied. It was just a couple of minutes before school letting out, so it could have been potentially much worse," an officer told NBC Chicago.
Chicago Avenue between Central Park and Lawndale was reopened to traffic at about 7 p.m.
